MILLINGTON, Tennessee – Naval Support Activity Mid-South and tenant commands pinned 40 new chief petty officers during a ceremony October 21, 2022, in Millington Tennessee.

The CPO Pinning Ceremony is the culmination of a six-week training period where senior enlisted leaders are challenged on their leadership and mentoring abilities. A senior CPO will mentor a CPO selectee during this training period and help guide them to becoming a stronger leader.

“Being a Chief means stepping out of your comfort zone,“ said Master Chief Avionics Technician Charles Torres. “The expectation is for them to lean on their brothers and sisters [in the mess,] to create solutions and create a foundation for Sailors after them.

The rank of Chief Petty Officer is a very important milestone in a Sailors career. Being the backbone of the Navy, these individuals take on a wide range of responsibilities while adhering to the core values of honor, courage and commitment.

“Becoming a chief was a process with many challenges and events where you learn from each other,” said Chief Hospital Corpsman Leonard Bissa. “You learn to think of the bigger picture and remove yourself from an individual perspective. The idea is to remove barriers and remain approachable.”

The chief petty officer, as recognized today, was officially established April 1, 1893, when the rank “petty officer first class” was shifted to “chief petty officer.” This new rank encompassed nine ratings, or occupational specialties: Chief Master-at-Arms, Chief Boatswain’s Mate, Chief Quartermaster, Chief Gunner’s Mate, Chief Machinist, Chief Carpenter’s Mate, Chief Yeoman, Apothecary, and Band Master.

Chiefs are recognized for exemplary technical expertise within their rating, superior administrative skills, and strong leadership ability. Most importantly, chiefs bridge the gap between officers and enlisted personnel, acting as supervisors as well as advocates for their Sailors.

NSA Mid-South’s chief pinning was held just off base at Crosspointe Baptist Church. Chiefs, selected from multiple tenant commands, including the Navy Personnel Command and Navy Recruiting Command were simultaneously pinned with family, friends and guests in attendance.

NSA Mid-South is the human resources center of excellence for the Navy; home to Navy Personnel Command, Navy Recruiting Command, Navy Manpower Analysis Center and other development commands including the 21st Century Sailor Command and My Navy Career Center.
