You’ve heard it before: The more things change, the more they stay the same. That’s certainly true for PS: The Preventive Maintenance Magazine or, more commonly, PS Magazine, which over it’s 70-plus years has endured its share of change.
It’s transitioned from a monthly, cartoon-illustrated paper magazine to a fully-online information portal. Characters have come and gone, while others, like MSG Half-Mast, have been around since the beginning. Walk into any motor pool and mention PS and chances are someone will know about the magazine.
Through all of the changes, though, the magazine’s mission of assisting Soldiers, warfighters and civilian maintainers across the entire readiness and sustainment enterprise with the latest preventive maintenance, supply and safety information has remained unchanged.
While many readers miss the print magazine and especially the cartoons, the online format provides technological elements that weren’t possible in a two-dimensional magazine. For example, the magazine publishes information much quicker than ever before (within days or weeks rather than four to five months) and is able to hyperlink to other sources of information and websites.
Also, unlike the paper format, the website provides the ability to warehouse documents, posters and archives of past articles, which readers can download and put to immediate use.
The latest feature made possible by the magazine’s electronic format is the introduction of PS How-To videos. Most websites are fairly intuitive and PS strives to make its site as user-friendly as possible. Still, there’s a lot of information to sort through, and these short video tutorials (two minutes or less) are designed to educate and optimize the user’s experience on the website. To date, topics include Homepage Introduction, The Articles Tab, The Search Function and The Fleets Tab.
As the website continues to evolve, more videos will be added to spotlight and overview the latest interactive enhancements and how to get the most out of them.
The link to the PS How-To Videos page is under the Resources tab in a dropdown menu.
From the Resources tab, select PS How-To Videos and then click on the video you would like to watch. In just a few minutes, you will be a PS-surfing pro.
And if you’re feeling nostalgic, visit the Classic Cartoons section before signing off and enjoy some of the magazine’s iconic full-color center sections (known as continuities) that spoof movies, TV shows and books, all in the name of “preaching the gospel of preventive maintenance.” See companion article at https://www.dvidshub.net/news/431080/ps-magazine-shares-some-its-best-classic-cartoons.
