SAN DIEGO, Calif. – The amphibious assault ship USS Boxer (LHD 4) hosted a spooky Halloween celebration in the upper vehicle deck, October 31, 2022.
The celebration included Halloween-themed carnival games, a haunted hallway, a door decoration competition and, the main event, a costume contest hosted by the Morale Welfare and Recreation (MWR) committee.
“With so many holidays jam packed later on in the year, Halloween is a good warm up for the crew to enjoy and get a break from their busy schedules,” said Ryan VanOtten, Boxer’s fun boss.
The celebration featured Sailors dressed as characters from Star Wars, and everything else from witches to the Scooby-Doo Crew. More than 50 costumes were featured during the costume contest. In the end, the winners of the event were some of Star Wars’ most renowned characters, Maleficent and the crew’s favorite, a “King Sweeper,” which was a Sailor dressed as a king armed with a broom.
“I love Halloween,” said Aviation Boatswain’s Mate 3rd class Alexandra Alfordjones, a native of Montgomery, Alabama, assigned to Boxer’s Air Department and a member of MWR. “I like the spookiness in the air, and fall is the best season because of all the pumpkin spice flavored treats.”
Assigned to Expeditionary Strike Group (ESG) 3, Boxer is a Wasp-class amphibious assault ship, commissioned Feb. 11, 1995, and is the sixth U.S. ship to bear the name.
