Children at Rota Elementary School gathered for an assembly in observance of Unity Day, Oct. 19, 2022. The day was established by the Pacer’s National Bullying Center as a day to celebrate unity through kindness, acceptance and inclusion, and to send a visual message that no child should experience bullying.
During the assembly, Rota Elementary School Principal, Kenneth Kirk, spoke about what Unity Day was and how excited he was to see everyone wearing orange in a show of unity.
“Observances like Unity Day teach children the importance of recognizing something we value as a community,” said Kirk when asked about the importance of the day.
Kirk went on to describe that days like this bring the topic to the forefront and allows discussion. Ultimately he hopes that by celebrating this day it will remind the children to stand up to bullying and continue to foster the positive culture at Rota Elementary School.
After Kirk’s remarks, the school’s music teacher Nicole Cedeño led the students in their musical tribute by singing a song on kindness.
Dr. Mary Anne Hartley, school counselor, ended the assembly by talking to the students about the importance of being kind to each other. Throughout October, Hartley’s guidance lessons have focused on discussing the hurtful and harmful behaviors of bullying, types of bullying, and how to stand up for themselves and others.
At the completion of the assembly, the students from Rota Elementary School joined the students of David Glasgow Farragut (DGF) Middle/High School on the school field to take a UNITY photo with all the students, teachers, and staff.
