HONOLULU – On October 31, 2022, Joint Task Force-Red Hill began the final phase of its unpacking operation using pumps to remove the remaining fuel from the pipelines connecting the Red Hill Bulk Fuel Storage Facility to fuel points on Joint Base Pearl Harbor-Hickam. During operations today, the JTF removed approximately 7,000 gallons of JP-5 fuel and 29,000 gallons of F-24 fuel without incident.
All JP-5 has been removed from the pipelines. F-24 and F-76 low point drain transfer will continue tomorrow.
This final phase is going slower than expected due to pump flow rates being less than what was anticipated. While our plan is to complete the unpacking evolution tomorrow, it is likely we will continue into Wednesday.
“We are prioritizing safety over speed and will keep the community and media informed,” said Rear Admiral John Wade, Commander, Joint Task Force-Red Hill. “We will continue to execute deliberately and methodically with Hawaii Department of Health and Environmental
Protection Agency oversight.”
Total fuel removed to date for all evolutions is: 923,721 gals
• JP-5: 215,359 gals (208,639 gravity + 6,720 low point transfer) – unpacking for this line is complete
• F-24: 121,380 gals (92,316 gravity + 29,064 low point transfer) – unpacking for this line is not complete;
continue low point transfer tomorrow
• F-76: 586,982 gals (586,982 gravity) – unpacking this line is not complete; will commence low point transfer tomorrow
