On Oct. 28, 2022, Joint Task Force-Red Hill continued unpacking of the F-76 fuel line and removed approximately 330,000 gallons of marine diesel fuel without incident. The removed fuel will be stored on Joint Base Pearl Harbor- Hickam and used by U.S. Indo-Pacific air and maritime assets for operations and training.
Today’s unpacking efforts mark the end of Phase III of the Unpacking Operation, in which gravity was used to drain the pipelines. So far, the JTF has removed approximately 587,000 gallons of F-76, 209,000 gallons of JP-5 (multipurpose fuel), and 93,000 gallons of F-24 (aviation fuel) for an approximate total of 889,000 gallons of fuel.
On Oct. 31, the JTF will begin Phase IV of the Unpacking Operation, using vacuum pumps to remove any remaining fuel in the pipelines via low-point drains and transferring that fuel to an above-ground storage tank. This process is expected to take two days. Representatives from the Department of Health, the Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Coast Guard will continue to monitor and provide oversight during the evolutions.
