ST. LOUIS, Mo. -- USS St. Louis (LCS 19) Sailors traveled to St. Louis Oct. 31 to visit their namesake city and engage with local leaders, students, civic groups and media.
The ship is named after the city of St. Louis, Missouri, and is the seventh ship named after the city. While there, the Sailors visited with the ship’s sponsor, Barbara Taylor, at a luncheon she hosted at the St. Louis Club. The crew also visited the Missouri Botanical Garden and toured the Jack C. Taylor Visitor Center.
The Taylor family has multiple ties to the United States Navy. Barbara Taylor’s father-in-law, Jack Taylor, was a naval fighter pilot who served in World War II. Following his naval career, Jack Taylor founded Enterprise, named after one of the ships he served aboard.
Notable during the team’s stay was a trip to Marian Middle School. Last year, students there sent a care package to the St. Louis crew that contained jokes, cards, and notes that students made to show their thanks and appreciation. So, the St. Louis Sailors stopped by the school to personally thank them for their thoughtful support.
The crew contingent also spoke to students at the Parkway School District about their experiences serving in the Navy. Additional social calls included the Veteran’s Association, the VA Fisher House, and the Soldier’s Memorial, featuring an extensive history of all ships to carry the name for the Midwestern city.
To learn more about their namesake and the city’s icons, the Sailors had the opportunity to tour the famed Anheuser-Busch Brewery, Busch Stadium, the St. Louis Cardinals Hall of Fame, Citypark Stadium, the Gateway Arch, and attend a St. Louis Blues hockey game at Enterprise Center.
The Freedom-variant, littoral combat ship was commissioned Aug. 8, 2020, and is stationed in Mayport, Florida.
LCS is a fast, agile, mission-focused platform designed for operation in near-shore environments yet capable of open-ocean operation. It is designed to defeat asymmetric "anti-access" threats and is capable of supporting forward presence, maritime security, sea control, and deterrence.
