NAS JRB FORT WORTH, Texas – Service members from Naval Air Station (NAS) Joint Reserve Base (JRB) Fort Worth joined the Dallas Mavericks in packing over 1,200 meals to feed the hungry in North Texas. The event took place at the American Airlines Center on November 3rd for the Hoops for Troops Commitment to Service project. The meals were delivered to The SoupMobile, a mobile meal provider helping feed North Texas youth and families in need.
Dallas Mavericks’ Head Coach, Jason Kidd, opened the practice to service members. They sat court-side while the team members practiced, and were able to participate in some shooting competitions. A few service members received signed autographs from some of the players during open practice.
“This is a Mav group effort to get the military here,” Kidd explained. “For the guys to participate, it is just a natural fit. You can see the guys had a good time. They probably wish practice was like this more often, but it is for a great cause, and we couldn’t be more thankful.”
Senior Chief Petty Officer Natasha Livingston served at the event with her seven-year-old son and enjoyed the experience.
“It’s a great opportunity today to give back with the Dallas Mavericks,” she said. “It’s nice to know that we mean something to the community. Most of us here in uniform wear the uniform because we want to. It’s a voluntary service, so we’re here because we want to. The fact that the Dallas Mavericks appreciate that and are willing to share their open practice is awesome.”
Staff Sergeant Anthony Anglero of the Texas Air National Guard 136th Maintenance Group, participated in a half-court shot competition, and made a half-court shot to remember.
“I loved being able to help those in need, and then having some fun with the players and the staff. I was able to participate in a half-court shot competition with the players. My shots kept getting close, until I finally got one. Everyone went crazy so that was a lot of fun,” said Anglero.
Dallas Mavericks’ power forward Dorian Finney-Smith packed lunches with the military before practice. He grew up by the Norfolk Naval Shipyard Navy Base in Portsmouth, Virginia. His grandmother and brother had jobs on the military base.
“I want to help the less fortunate and those who don’t have resources,” said Finney-Smith. “So today we went out there and gave back. We won last night, and it was fun having [the service members] in our world a little bit today. We love getting to serve together.”
