Arlington, Va. -- The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration launched a virtual tour of the Vietnam War exhibit, located in the Pentagon on the third floor, A-Ring, between corridors two and three, November 10, 2022.
The Pentagon exhibit opened December 20, 2016, to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Vietnam War to honor the service and sacrifice of our Nation’s Vietnam veterans and their families.
Awarded the 2017 John Wesley Powell Prize for excellence in the fields of historic preservation and historic displays, the Vietnam War Exhibit is the first and only large-scale historical exhibit at the Pentagon and describes the United States’ involvement in the Vietnam War through a timeline of events, artifacts, historic photographs, and video footage for more than 100,000 public visitors who tour the Pentagon annually.
This virtual tour of the entire exhibit is the first of its kind, eliminating the arduous scheduled-approval process, and providing access to the same engaging sights and sounds of an in-person guided tour.
The exhibit’s innovative design features a variety of multimedia elements and two dioramas with two authentic Vietnam-period Huey helicopter cabs integrated into wall-size mural backdrops of Southeast Asian landscapes. One Huey diorama represents a medevac operation in the red clay of the Central Highlands, while the other illustrates a troop landing in a rice paddy of the Delta.
Additional elements include wall murals depicting military air and ground operations; over one hundred feet of miniature sandbags simulating bunker construction; a “Remembering” section featuring memorabilia left at the Vietnam Veterans Memorial, including a test panel of The Wall itself; and ten large artifact displays containing authentic photographs, weapons, uniforms and a variety of other unique historical items.
The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration was authorized by Congress, established under the secretary of defense and launched by the president in 2012. By Presidential Proclamation, The United States of America Vietnam War Commemoration continues through Veterans Day, November 11, 2025.
The Commemoration honors all veterans who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Forces at any time from November 1, 1955 to May 15, 1975, regardless of location as all were called to serve and none could self-determine where they were stationed. Since 2012, more than 3.7 million Vietnam veterans and their families have been publicly thanked by friends and neighbors during more than 23 thousand ceremonies hosted by our dedicated Commemorative Partners.
