FORT CARSON, Colo. -- Maj. Gen. David Hodne, commanding general, 4th Infantry Division and Fort Carson, and Command Sgt. Maj. Adam Nash, senior enlisted leader, 4th Inf. Div. and Fort Carson, recognized retention teams across the division for meeting their retention goals in fiscal year 22 during the Commanding General’s Retention Awards Ceremony, Nov. 15, 2022, at the Elkhorn Conference Center, Fort Carson, Colorado.

“Retention continues to remain a huge effort in not only the 4th Inf. Div., but the whole Army,” said Hodne. “The collective effort of our retention teams to provide our Soldiers and Families with the necessary resources to continue their service is unsurpassable.”

Sgt. Maj. Yajaira Villarreal, 4th Inf. Div. Command Career Counselor, also believes the significance of retention goes above the division level.

“Retention is important because it effects the overall force alignment and Army's end-strength,” said Villarreal. “The longer the Soldier remains in the Army, the higher the return on investment. The reason I say it is an investment is because they are our replacements, the future leaders of the Army. Young Soldiers are gaining experience and knowledge that needs to be passed to the future Soldiers who are being recruited now.”

The division was divided into two categories. Category one consisted of 1st Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team and 3rd Armored Brigade Combat Team. Category two consisted of 4th Division Sustainment Brigade, 4th Combat Aviation Brigade, and 4th Inf. Div. Artillery.

The first award given was the “Top Dog” award. The award is for having the highest number of reenlistments accomplished over their unit’s assigned mission. Closing out the fiscal year at 105% of their assigned mission, 1st SBCT, 4th Inf. Div., took home the award for category one.

Closing out the fiscal year at 115% of their assigned mission, the category two winner was 4DSB.

The next award given was the “Early Bird” award. The award is granted to the first brigade to complete their assigned mission for the fiscal year. 1st SBCT received the award for category one; their second of the day, and 4CAB beat out 4DSB and DIVARTY to win category two.

The final award given was the prestigious Commanding General’s Excellence in Retention award. The award was presented to the top brigade for having the highest total combined percentage of reenlistments based off their assigned mission. 4DSB took home the award after achieving 115% of their assigned mission.

Following the ceremony, several reserve component career counselors were awarded the Army Achievement Medal for their exceptional performances for fiscal year 2022. Immediately after, two civilian contractors were awarded the Certificate of Appreciation for their direct responsibility in supporting the active component to reserve component accession mission.

“4th Inf. Div. continues to exceed the standards for retention,” said Villarreal. “Having leaders who care is a direct correlation for our success. Soldiers in this division are talking to leaders in the formation, communicating their issues and concerns, and leaders are listening and assisting on those issues and concerns. Continuing to build the credibility and trust in our organization will ensure an even stronger future for our Army.”
