Cmdr. Walter Brinkley relieved Cmdr. Scott Jones as commanding officer of the guided-missile destroyer USS Ross (DDG 71) during a change of command ceremony held at Naval Station Norfolk, Nov. 18. Jones had been in command of Ross since July 2021.

Jones led Ross on one patrol supporting French Carrier Strike Group operations, Operation Inherent Resolve, and Operation Noble Shield. This patrol was a part of a surge deployment to the Baltic as a Forward Deployed Naval Force Europe ship, conducting Ballistic Missile Defense operations on the Mediterranean and the Baltic Sea. Jones finished his command tour with Ross shifting homeports to Naval Station Norfolk. During his farewell speech, Jones expressed his confidence in the ship and crew.

“I truly believe that Ross is the mightiest ship in the fleet,” Jones said. “Her wardroom and crew have made her a fine warfighting machine.”

Brinkley takes command as Ross enters an Extended Dry-Docking Selected Restricted Availability period, but looks forward to the challenge and ship’s path forward.

“I am honored and humbled to assume command of such an accomplished warship and incredible crew,” Brinkley said. “I look forward to the many opportunities we have ahead to continue our success.”

Ross, commissioned June 28, 1997 at Galveston, Texas, is the second U.S. Navy ship to bear the name. It is the first U.S. Navy ship named for Medal of Honor recipient Donald K. Ross and the 21st Arleigh Burke-class destroyer.
