Naval Surface Warfare Center Dahlgren Division (NSWCDD) held their 2022 Academic Recognition Ceremony at the University of Mary Washington (UMW), Dahlgren campus Oct. 25. The celebration highlighted the academic and professional development of Dahlgren Division employees who successfully balanced family commitments and their academic efforts, while continuing to support the Navy.

The ceremony opened with remarks from NSWCDD Commanding Officer Capt. Philip ‘Phil’ Mlynarski and Technical Director Dale Sisson, Jr., SES. More than 186 division employees were recognized for going the extra mile to further their education and better the workforce by advancing their degrees.

Employees completed associates, bachelor’s, master’s and doctoral degrees, in addition to many others who received professional or academic certifications.

Sisson praised the awardees and confirmed Dahlgren’s steadfast commitment to workforce development. “There will continue to be an unwavering workforce development focus at the Dahlgren Division,” he said. “It is something that we will always care about, and make sure that we are investing in our workforce today, tomorrow and into the future.”

Several NSWCDD leaders spoke at the ceremony, including Deputy Chief Technology Officer Karen Smith; Human Resources Director Sandy Ambrose; Director of NSWCDD Project Management Certificate and Master of Business Administration Program at UMW Dr. John Burrow, Staffing, Classification and Recruiting Branch head Susan Tubman and Workforce Development Branch head Susan Botkin.

“We get the latest and greatest coming out of today's colleges and universities,” said Mlynarski. “This development helps the growth of our workforce and establishes the needs going forward for us to utilize our student’s knowledge and apply their updated degrees here to help deliver our overall products to the warfighter.”

“Advanced degrees are fundamental to our ability to move ahead of our peer competitors,” emphasized Burrow. “Our ability to think deep and think broad is truly an enabler and the fact that NSWCDD leadership sees value and supports it through encouraging their employees to pursue further degrees is fantastic.”

The afternoon closed with final remarks and encouraging words from Mlynarksi. “It is wonderful to see so many accomplished employees striving to better the workforce and themselves in their career.”
