MARINE CORPS AIR STATION CHERRY POINT, N.C.—2nd Low Altitude Air Defense Battalion (LAAD) recently activated a third firing battery, Charlie Battery, during a ceremony at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina, Nov. 9. 2nd LAAD is the first battalion to make this change in the Marine Corps.
“The LAAD community has been a very large part of the Force Design 2030 efforts over the past couple of years,” said U.S. Marine Corps Capt. Howard K. Mill, a low-altitude air-defense officer with 2nd LAAD. “This is to provide increased manpower since we are bringing new capabilities.”
2nd LAAD used the legacy Advanced Man-Portable Air-Defense Systems and transitioned to the Marine Air-Defense Integrated System and Light Marine Air-Defense Integrated System. The MADIS uses the Joint Light Tactical Vehicle, and the LMADIS uses two Polaris MRZRs, a team of electronic-warfare systems.
2nd LAAD incorporates the new technology to deter and neutralize the growing threat of unmanned aircraft systems.
“[LAAD] provide counter-UAS that brings a counter-reconnaissance capability, which can help us fight adversaries that use UAS,” said Mill. “The LAADs around the Marine Corps now have more equipment to mitigate any enemy advances.”
2nd LAAD is a subordinate unit of 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing, the aviation combat element of II Marine Expeditionary Force.
