    2nd Marine Aircraft Wing

Marine Attack Squadron (VMA) 542, 2nd Marine Aircraft Wing (MAW), is scheduled to hold a re-designation ceremony Dec. 1 at 10 a.m. at Marine Corps Air Station Cherry Point, North Carolina.

The ceremony marks VMA-542’s transition from an AV-8B Harrier squadron to the Marine Corps’ first East Coast operational F-35 Lightning II Joint Strike Fighter squadron as part of the Marine Corps’ modernization efforts for the future fight. VMA- 542 will become Marine Fighter Attack Squadron (VMFA) 542. The F-35 is a fifth-generation fighter jet with advanced stealth, agility and maneuverability, sensor and information fusion, and provides the pilot with real-time access to battlespace information. It is designed to meet an advanced threat, while improving lethality, survivability, and supportability.

VMA-542 activated in March 1942 and participated in every major conflict for the United States since then, to include World War II, the Korean War and the Vietnam War. VMA-542 participated in operations such as Operation Desert Shield and Desert Storm in Southwest Asia, Operation Noble Anvil in Kosovo, Operation Iraqi Freedom in Iraq, Operation Enduring Freedom in Afghanistan, Operation Odyssey Dawn in Libya, Operation Odyssey Lightning in Libya, Operation Inherent Resolve in Afghanistan, and deployments in support of multiple Marine Expeditionary Units.

The ceremony is open to confirmed RSVP’d media. Interested media must RSVP by 4 p.m., Nov. 29. All confirmed media will receive additional coordinating instructions and ground rules upon RSVP. Please submit RSVP to either 2ndmaw.commstrat@usmc.mil or Hudson.sadler@usmc.mil. Media seeking additional information may also call 252-466-4895.
