YOKOSUKA, Japan (Nov. 15, 2022) – Rear Adm. Rick Seif, commander, Submarine Group 7, visited the Royal Australian Navy (RAN) Collins-class submarine HMAS Farncomb (SSG 74) while ported at Japan Maritime Self-Defense Force Funakoshi Fleet headquarters in Yokosuka, Japan, Nov. 15, 2022.

Seif met with Farncomb leadership to tour the submarine and discuss its ongoing patrol in the U.S. 7th Fleet area of operations.

Farncomb was in Yokosuka for a scheduled port visit as part of its scheduled deployment to the Indo-Pacific region.

“As theater undersea warfare commander, our Allied submarine forces are key assets in the 7th and 5th Fleet areas of operations,” said Seif. “The Royal Australian Navy are some of our closest Allies. This tour was a great chance for me to head across the waterfront and meet face to face with the leadership that is out on the front lines accomplishing the mission.”

CTF 74 and Farncomb have worked together before, when Farncomb participated in an expeditionary logistics exercise with the Emory S. Land-class submarine tender USS Frank Cable (AS 40) in April of this year, during the tender’s port visit to Perth, Western Australia.

CTF 74 had operational control of Frank Cable during their deployment, as they conducted expeditionary maintenance and logistics in support of national security throughout 7th Fleet.

Following the tour, Seif was invited to the wardroom, where the leaders discussed the various challenges and opportunities present in the nuclear submarine force, as well as future bilateral training opportunities.

Based at Fleet Base West in Western Australia, HMAS Farncomb is the second of the six Collins-Class submarines to enter service in the Royal Australian Navy. Farncomb was launched in Adelaide, South Australia, on Dec. 15, 1995, and commissioned in Fremantle, Western Australia, on Jan. 31, 1998.

Submarine Group 7 directs forward-deployed, combat capable forces across the full spectrum of undersea warfare throughout the western Pacific, Indian Ocean, and Arabian Sea.
