AL ASAD, Iraq — The Headquarters and Headquarters Co., 751st Combat Sustainment Support Battalion, 96th Sustainment Brigade, under the 13th Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) held a Christmas dinner for Soldiers on Dec. 24, 2009. The event was held to give the Soldiers a sense of family during the holiday season.
"Being away from home can be difficult for some to cope with, so we thought it would be a great idea for everyone to get together and eat and laugh the day before Christmas," stated Capt. Misty Aycock, the company commander and a Columbia, S.C. native.
"The Morale Welfare and Recreation Committee prepared a superb meal for the Soldiers," said Aycock. "The MWR Committee was formed to help keep the morale of our Soldiers high. Since arriving to Al Asad, the committee has planned events for every month. In some instances, they were even able to provide multiple events in the same month." The spread of food consisted of steak, chicken, home-made macaroni and cheese, collard greens, beans, rice and Sgt. "Goodie" Goodwin's special, banana pudding. "I enjoy cooking at home, and since joining the Guard, I've cooked wherever we've gone," said Sgt. James Goodwin, the chaplain's assistant with the company and a Hopkins, S.C. resident. "It feels good to see everything I cooked gone at the end of an event. That means everyone liked what they ate and that makes me feel good," said Goodwin.
Sgt. 1st Class Donald Bethea, from Dillon, S.C., and a transportation noncommissioned officer and Sgt. James Hayes, of Columbia, S.C., helped prepare the meal. "Cooking a large meal reminded me of being at home," said Bethea. "I have a large family and we all get together during the holidays."
What wasn't prepared on the grill, the cooks used hot plates and burners to prepare. The Soldiers enjoyed music during the dinner provided by the Soldiers. Hayes played the role of Santa, providing gifts for members of the unit. The gifts ranged from mugs and t-shirts to hats and book bags. The event had an enormous turn out and Soldiers voiced that they were grateful for the event. "I'm really thankful for the Christmas party that the morale team put on, as well as all of the other events that they have put on to give us something to do," said Sgt. Johnny Babb, the battalion commander's driver and a Clinton, S.C., native.
