FORWARD OPERATING BASE WARRIOR, KIRKUK, Iraq — "It's finally good to sit down together," said Command Sgt. Maj. James Daniels, command sergeant major of 1st Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, as he looked across the room at his Iraqi counterpart.

Daniels and the Iraqi army's 12th Division Command Sgt. Maj. Waleed Abrihem Asmahel met to discuss future training for the 12th Div. soldiers, Dec. 30.

"As we face the new year, what type of goals do you want to set for the division and brigade?" Daniels asked.

"I want more training," Asmahel replied, adding his desire for plans to start a basic-training program for new recruits, advanced courses to train non-commissioned officers and literacy classes.

About the classes and training planned for the 12th Div., Asmehel said the Iraqi army is always trying to take it to the next level. To help get his partner to that level, Daniels offered primary instruction materials to assist with future courses.

"We build primary instruction to make sure we have the right person to mentor and instruct our Soldiers," Daniels said.

According to Asmehel, he and Daniels will visit the 12th Div.'s four brigades over the course of 2010, visits that will introduce them to more than 12,000 Soldiers.

Before they see those soldiers, Daniels passed part of the U.S. Army's heritage along.

He suggested the 12th Div. Soldiers learn the seven Army values: loyalty, duty, respect, selfless service, honor, integrity, and personal courage. To help that vision become reality, he gave Asmahel a chain with a tag that listed the seven values in Arabic.

"As the standard bearer for the unit, you should be the first one to wear it," Daniels said.
