The Pennsylvania Air National Guard’s 103rd Attack Squadron, a subordinate unit of the 111th Attack Wing headquartered at Biddle Air National Guard Base in Horsham, Pennsylvania, held a change of command ceremony on base Nov. 30, 2022.
PAANG Lt. Col. Alex Van Zant officially assumed command of the 103rd ATKS by accepting the unit colors from Lt. Col. Pete, who relinquished command during the ceremony symbolizing the transfer of leadership.
PAANG Col. Deane E. Thomey, 111th ATKW Commander, presided over the ceremony and reflected on the incoming and outgoing leaders.
“This is always a bittersweet moment, honoring a commander for his years of command, culminating not only his time in command, but also a distinguished military career,” said Thomey. “Welcome to long-time 111th member, Lt. Col. Alex Van Zant and his family, in this new role.”
While addressing attendees Bigley said leading the men and women of the 103rd ATKS was an honor and a highlight of his military career. He also went on to say he was confident in the ability of Van Zant and the senior enlisted leaders to lead the unit, which is nearing its 100-year anniversary, into the future.
Van Zant thanked Bigley for his mentorship and the example he set as a commander.
“It’s an honor to take command of this squadron,” said Van Zant. “Not only because of its history, but also because I know I’m inheriting a unit that’s in great shape because of Pete’s leadership and because of the men and women who remain at the unit to help see the 103rd Attack Squadron into the next 100 years.”
