A group of graduate students from the Konkuk University’s Real Estate Department in Seoul visited Camp Humphreys for a brief tour of the base, Nov. 30.
“Camp Humphreys is the birth of a new city,” said Ghim Duk-gi, a real estate redevelopment professor at Konkuk University. “For students studying real estate, it was great for us to see what a new American city looks like, including the urban development and planning structure. We appreciate this special opportunity to visit.”
U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys representatives provided a windshield tour of the installation, which included a stop at the installation’s Army Family Housing Office, who showcased an example of family housing available on the installation. One of the key goals of the tour was to provide an idea of how the U.S. military and the Republic of Korea worked together in recent years to expand the installation and its mission.
“Camp Humphreys is the largest U.S. military base outside of the Continental U.S. and represents a focal point for U.S. and Korea relations,” said Ghim. “It is a perfect site to help our students understand the value of the partnership between the United States and the Republic of Korea. It helps them understand how the two countries were able to a build a big, new city like this together.
The students saw that like any city, Camp Humphreys was alive with movement as people, U.S. Soldiers and their families, bustled between housing, workplaces, and various base services.
“Seeing U.S. Soldiers throughout Camp Humphreys made me feel supported and very welcomed,” said Won Tae-hee, a Konkuk University graduate student. “It is amazing and surprising such a well-planned city has been built in Pyeongtaek.”
Throughout the tour, students discussed the architecture and construction of Camp Humphreys, housing challenges on and off the installation, and the overall strategic value of the installation as part of the ROK-U.S. Alliance.
“This trip was very helpful for our students to understand not only ideas from a real-estate point of view but also the U.S. military’s role in the Republic of Korea,” said Ghim. “We hope to visit again next year and see even more facilities.”
