EL PASO, TEXAS – 1st Armored Division gathered at the El Paso Convention Center for a leadership summit Dec. 13-14, 2022.

“This is an opportunity for us to bring together leaders from across the installation to focus on particular issues and topics,” said U.S. Army Col. Thurman McKenzie, 1st Armored Division Artillery commander. “For this summit in particular, the focus was on leadership. Leadership is a critical component of what we do in the military.”

Over 600 leaders from the 1st Armored Division and El Paso community met at the convention center in downtown El Paso. The two-day summit focused not only on leadership but also training management. Motivational speakers and senior Army leaders emphasized critical aspects of organizational leadership.

“It’s great to be here today to expand on the knowledge I have and be able to give that to the junior and senior leaders that fall under me,” said U.S. Army 1st Sgt. Candi Harrington, assigned to the Dakota Force Support Troop, 6-1 Cavalry Regiment, 1st Armored Division. “It’s not every day that you get to run into the division commander and sergeant major, so to be here and get feedback I can take back to the formation is awesome.”

McKenzie stated the most critical thing we do in wearing the uniform is lead.

"At the end of the day, we don’t get to choose the missions that come our way," he added. "Our nation expects us to accomplish whatever mission that is provided to us. So I think it’s worthwhile for leaders to take time out of their busy days and busy schedules to really think about this fundamental thing that they are required to do which is to lead."

Maj. Gen. James P. Isenhower, III, commanding general 1st Armored Division, encouraged leaders to pursue innovation, solutions that endure, and solve problems at their level. He added that professionals must look inward and recognize where they have deficiencies they need to work on to become better.

"If you have the resources and authority to solve problems, it's your problem to solve," stated Isenhower.

The concluding session of the two-day summit was largely led by audience discussion. Participants were granted the opportunity to ask senior leaders questions regarding logistics, battle rhythm, planning, and how to better lead subordinates.
