KABUL, Afghanistan — An Afghan-international security force searched a compound southeast of the village of Kobayl, Kandahar district, after intelligence confirmed militant activity inside. During the search, the joint force captured a Taliban facilitator and other insurgents believed responsible for IED and suicide attacks.
In Logar last night, a joint security force searched a compound in the village of Ozbak Kheyl, in the Baraki Barak district, detained insurgents and recovered explosive materials.
No shots were fired and no Afghan civilians were harmed during either operation.
And, in Paktika last night, an Afghan-international security force killed several insurgents while searching for a Haqqani commander in a rural house southwest of Orgun Blkalan village, in the Sarobi district. When the assault force entered the area they were met with an imminent threat and killed insurgents. The joint force also detained other militants. Multiple weapons were recovered, including automatic rifles.
ISAF Casualty
An ISAF service member from the United States died of wounds from an IED strike in eastern Afghanistan yesterday.
Provincial Governor, PRT Dedicate District Center
Provincial and district leaders, the Task Force Lethal Warrior commander and a Kunar Provincial Reconstruction Team engineer opened the doors to the Chapa Dara District Center, Jan. 4.
Kunar Provincial Governor Fazlullah Wahidi was on hand to cut the ribbon with Mr. Abdul Marzan, Chapa Dara district sub-governor; Brig. Gen. Hussain Khallullah, Kunar provincial chief of police; U.S. Army Battalion Commander Lt. Col. Brian Pearl; U.S. Navy Lt. Cmdr. Jay Burgess, PRT lead engineer, and many tribal elders.
According to Marzan, the district center is an important structure to help connect the people to their government, while giving the police a place to operate to bring peace and stability to the district.
"The new group of police arrived here to [help with] peace in this area of Chapa Dara district," Marzan said. "This will help us bring peace here."
The district center is a $200,000 investment and creates a centralized place where villagers and the government can conduct business and distribute information.
Burgess said the structure was an important construction project because it continues the PRT's efforts to bring the Afghan people closer to their government.
"This building was designed by Afghan engineers, built with Afghan hands through an Afghan construction company and will be used by Afghan government officials," said Burgess.
