FORT KNOX, Ky. — Lt. Gen. Joseph F. Peterson, U.S. Army Forces Command deputy commanding general and Honolulu, Hawaii, native, visited the 3rd Sustainment Command (Expeditionary) Tuesday Dec. 15 to receive briefings on the command's reset status since returning to Fort Knox from service in Iraq in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Peterson participated in the briefings with the intent of identifying and discussing any issues identified during the reset stage of the Army Force Generation model.
According to the Army's 2009 posture statement, the ARFORGEN process is the method for effectively and efficiently generating trained and ready forces for combatant commanders on a sustainable, rotational basis. As such, it synchronizes the Army's primary title systems: manning, equipping, training, resourcing, sustaining, and modernizing — used to generate forces.
During the briefing, Peterson took the time to thank Soldiers of the command for a job well done in Iraq, and for their diligence during the reset period, which he described as being difficult for logisticians and more importantly, a time to "take a knee."
"We have been in a transition state for the last five years, and for everyone sitting here, you get to be a part of this transition period," said Peterson. "How we transition during this period is squarely on our shoulders."
Escorted by Col. Robin Akin, 3rd ESC commander, and Nashville, Tenn., native, Peterson listened to the command's reset and retrain process while providing input from a FORSCOM perspective.
Also of particular interest to Peterson were the command's modified table of organization and equipment, upcoming training and the ability of the command to remain flexible and adaptable while the Army supports two major campaigns.
Peterson explained that being flexible and adaptable allows the Army to operate successfully without conflict or issue.
Overall, Peterson was pleased with his visit to the 3d ESC and its accomplishments in Iraq and at Fort Knox. He thanked the command for its hard work in the reset stages and for its future endeavors.
"I'm very proud of what you accomplished in Iraq, and as an Army we're doing extremely well in Iraq and Afghanistan," said Peterson. "At the core of everything we do, we have great Soldiers, led by great leaders, and supported by great Families."
