Naval Station (NAVSTA) Rota port operations department is responsible for harbor movements of U.S. Navy ships at Rota naval base. Port Ops personnel maintain harbor security boats at NAVSTA Rota and ensure they are ready to accomplish their anti-terrorism force protection (ATFP) mission. They support our Spanish and coalition forces when needed, and also provide manpower and equipment to combat and clean any oil spill that may occur. Most importantly, Port Ops Rota is a crucial part of making sure that all ship movements are conducted safely and according to schedule.
This year Port Ops set a record with over 283 ship movements. Daily jobs include driving small boats, moving harbor equipment, and completing maintenance and repairs on all equipment necessary for these operations. Port Ops Rota constantly provides the manpower and expertise to enable a diverse group of assets and commands to accomplish their missions. One key Sailor at Port Ops is Machinists Mate 1st Class Biniamin Mozias, who always goes above and beyond to accomplish his duties.
Mozias quickly established himself as a dedicated, hard-working professional, and was selected to serve as the department’s leading petty officer. He is a versatile Sailor who performs his duties well, maintaining the highest standards. His technical and managerial skills have been proven and tested multiple times, directly contributing to Port Ops’ success in supporting critical missions at sea and ashore. His strong leadership and strict adherence to safety requirements earned the highest level of trust from both his Sailors and his supervisors.
With Mozias at the helm, the department successfully executed 442 oil booming and debooming operations, 45 fender movements, and 18 barge towing operations. He also coordinated the use of cranes and Forward Deployed Regional Maintenance Center (FDRMC) personnel working with Port Ops Sailors in the mission critical repair of the USS Porter (DDG-78) towed array sonar, emergency repairs to the USS Cole (DDG-67) gas turbine generator and emergency repairs to a shaft seal aboard USS Bainbridge (DDG-96).
In addition to overseeing the execution of four maintenance program revisions and supervising 17,499 maintenance checks and 214 spot-checks, Mozias led the 39-person Port Ops department to identify and fix 243 discrepancies, keeping all 13 boats in optimal condition, an achievement recognized by inspectors from the Board of Inspection and Survey (INSURV) who praised the department stating, “These boats have the best upkeep in the region!”
