SAN ANTONIO - Killeen and Fort Hood's own John Rudesheim, the son of Brig. Gen. Frederick Rudesheim, deputy commanding general, 1st Cavalry Division, played in the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band at the Alamodome in San Antonio Saturday.
Being able to represent Fort Hood at an Army sponsored event gives John extra motivation during the game, as well as pride for his community.
"Representing Ft. Hood, especially it being the largest military establishment in the world, at this U.S. Army All-American Bowl is great," John said. "It's great to come from an area where I'm involved in the Army every day."
John's deep family ties to the military gives this opportunity extra meaning.
"Just the fact that the Army sponsors this Bowl and the marching band is a huge deal to me, my family and my dad," said John. "So when we found out that I would be playing in the marching band made it all the more special."
For the past three years the United States Army Field Band has been here working as mentors for the young musicians in the U.S. Army All-American Marching Band led by Col. Thomas Palmatier, conductor and commander for the U.S. Army Field Band who had some positive reviews of the students playing.
"They come in prepared," Palmatier said. "Highly motivated, highly trained and ready to go out and execute the mission. It's really an inspiration for us to come and work with some of the finest young musicians in America today."
John enjoyed the military mentors as well as his comrades playing beside him in the drum-line.
"Meeting all the guys who love drumming as much as I do has been my favorite part," John said. "The staff has been awesome. These are some of the best people in the world at what they do. Learning and absorbing from them has been great."
This isn't John's only service to his country with his musical talents.
"I am in the Killeen High School marching and concert band as well as part of various community volunteer bands that played throughout central Texas," John said. "When I was younger I believe I did some snare drum bits back home on various army posts."
John is the drum-line captain, varsity soccer captain and is in the National Honor Society. He is currently looking at two various college paths, the University of Texas in Austin for music performance or Belmont University in Nashville, Tenn., for the music business program.
