NEW ORLEANS — Every year, history repeats itself as residents and organizations gather in the French Quarter to commemorate the Battle of New Orleans and honor its fallen Soldiers.
This year's ceremony, featuring Soldiers from the Louisiana Army National Guard's Honor Guard, was held at the historic Jackson Square, Jan. 8.
"This ceremony symbolizes something that is near and dear to us," said Staff Sgt. Cedric J. Grimes, non commissioned officer-in-charge of the honor guard.
"We take pride in our community, and we want to give the fallen the proper respect that they deserve," added Grimes, who has been a part of the team for eight months.
The Battle of New Orleans, which marked Louisiana's admission into the Union, took place on Jan. 8, 1815, on the Chalmette, La., battleground and was the last major battle of the War of 1812.
"For the Honor Guard team to come out and participate in this event with us today, holds a very special place in my heart," said Patricia Gallagher, program coordinator and president of the Chalmette Chapter of the U.S. Daughters of 1812. "They have my undying thanks for a job well done!"
The event is sponsored by the U.S. Daughters of 1812, a society whose purpose is to promote and preserve the knowledge of American history through the celebration of patriotic anniversaries.
