CAMP ARIFJAN, Kuwait -- Task Force Spartan Soldiers participated in an interactive and detailed escape room experience at Camp Arifjan, Kuwait. They learned how to recognize, stop, and report sexual harassment and assault.
Sgt. Maj. Erika Nyberg, the Sexual Assault Response Coordinator for Task Force Spartan, and Sgt. 1st Class Wendy Trayer, 28th Infantry Division’s Victim’s Advocate, joined forces in creating an escape room experience that teaches the foundations of the Army's Sexual Harassment/Assault Response and Prevention Program.
“The purpose of the sharp escape room is to provide an engaging and unique way to educate Soldiers and U.S. Army civilians by reinforcing sharp knowledge skills,” says Trayer.
The SHARP Escape Room is a cutting-edge training tool that solidifies essential SHARP competencies. It promotes candid, constructive communication and provides an opportunity for teamwork and collaboration towards a common goal. Participants were expected to follow the plot and consider how an intervention might have affected the result.
“I think it’s important because it really tests a Soldier’s knowledge and retention,” said Trayer. “Soldiers will sit through a PowerPoint briefing, but the SHARP Escape Room makes them put that [knowledge] to the test. They have to apply what they’ve learned and see what they’re retaining.”
When the hosts read the introductory scenario, which implies that the first clue is concealed with an object in which the resident of the room takes great pride, they start the 30-minute timer. This group’s scenario: that of a party increasing, continues from there as participants self-direct through multiple clues to an unconscious person who is unable to provide consent. Some of the answers can also be found by understanding the sexual assault restricted and unrestricted reporting choices as well as the Department of the Army form for filing official reports of sexual harassment.
While investigating the rooms, the group of Soldiers discovered clues. Along with a SARC office, the facility had a barracks room equipped with a television and bed. Personal photos and posters are used to embellish the space. A uniform is in the laundry basket and there are garments hanging in the closet. It seems as though the occupant might show up at any moment.
“We’ve had Soldiers tell us that that was the best SHARP training that they’ve ever had. It promoted teamwork and it was active engagement. The escape room makes the Soldiers work together as a team,” said Trayer.
