CAMP LEJEUNE - Tax season has officially begun and Marine Corps Base Camp Lejeune is here to ensure Marines are ready and prepared for this year’s tax season.

The Camp Lejeune Tax Center will open its doors today, Jan. 23. for service members, their dependents and retirees to receive free tax services.

Each year the Camp Lejeune Tax Center serves an average of 4,500 customers and saves the Camp Lejeune community an average of $1.2 million annually. The tax center is mainly supported by Marines who are temporarily assigned each year. All 19 employees of the tax center are certified by the IRS through its Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA) program before they can assist the people of Camp Lejeune with their taxes. Additionally, the non-commissioned officers and staff non-commissioned officers are certified by Jackson-Hewitt.

“I push the base tax center because we know the unique circumstances that all the Marines go through,” said John Quinton, director of the Consolidated Tax Center for Camp Lejeune and New River. “You’re going to get better service here than doing it online because you're going to have someone face-to-face doing your taxes, and you can ask questions.”

Quinton also says that some states offer different benefits to active duty personnel that they may not know about.

“Some states don't require Marines to pay taxes, but if the Marine doesn't know it, they are going to continue paying taxes and lose out on money,” said Quinton.

Tax filers should bring their state ID and a copy of all of their tax documents they want to use. The Camp Lejeune Tax Center is available for walk-ins, but does take appointments. You can also drop off your tax paperwork and pick up your documents once your taxes have been prepared. The Camp Lejeune Tax Center is open Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, and Friday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. Wednesday is for appointments only and is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. The tax center is also open on Saturdays for E-5 and below from 9 a.m. to noon. To make an appointment or if you have any questions, call the tax center’s front desk at (910) 451-6908 or (910) 451-5351.

The New River Tax Center, located at Building AS-216, opens Jan. 31. It can be reached at (910) 449-6169, and it is open Tuesday, Wednesday, and Thursday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
