The 49th Force Support Squadron held a ribbon cutting ceremony at Club Holloman, Feb. 1, 2023, to officially open the 49er Cafe.

The cafe is a new primary dining option for dorm Airmen now while the Shifting Sands Dining Facility is closed for renovations. Additionally, the cafe is open for all meal periods to all members of Team Holloman and anyone with base access.

“The 49er Cafe is going to fill the void as the DFAC is closing for modifications over the next year and a half,” said Donald Kramer, 49th Force Support Squadron deputy director. “It also provides something unique to Holloman as no other entity on base is offering the type of food that we have here. It also provides a healthier option to Airmen.”

The 49er Cafe offers build-your-own-burritos, quesadillas and burrito bowls, with a wide variety of fillings, including chicken, steak, beyond beef, corn, salsa, cheese and much more.

“Although I really enjoyed eating at the DFAC, the 49er Cafe brings a nice variety of foods with vibrant flavors that I think most Airmen will enjoy,” said U.S. Air Force Chief Master Sgt. Jeffrey Martin, 49th Wing command chief. “I want to give a huge thanks to the FSS team who put this venue together.”

Besides the unique food options offered at the 49er Cafe, the cafe also brings a unique opportunity for both 49th FSS members and non-appropriated funds employees to train in the restaurant industry.

“When the DFAC opens back up we’re going to need most of our Airmen to return back to working there,” said U.S. Air Force Staff Sgt. Dominic Bogier, 49th Force Support Squadron 49er Cafe shift leader. “We came here to not only train our Airmen but to also train the NAF employees so that when we return to the DFAC, they can keep [the cafe] up and running for the base.”

While the restaurant is operated by the 49th FSS, the opening of the 49er Cafe was a team effort. The 49th Civil Engineer Squadron and the 49th Equipment Maintenance Squadron came together to provide electrical, plumbing, the signs hanging around the cafe, and more.

The opening of the 49er Cafe represents Holloman’s mission to provide healthy and affordable food options that will benefit everyone on base.
