FORTBRAGG, N.C --The Military Health System named Maj. (Dr.) Emily Penick, gynecologic oncologist at Womack Army Medical Center as the junior Army 2022 winner of the Award for the Advancement of Women Physicians in Military Medicine.

This award was established to honor outstanding physicians who have made significant contributions to the advocacy of female physicians and whose behavior, example, or success can be emulated by others, especially by younger female physicians.

Penick is board-certified in gynecologic oncology. She expressed gratitude to the many mentors, advocates, and leaders who have sponsored her for opportunities. Penick was nominated by retired Col Lisa Foglia, former designated institutional officer.

“I know that there are a lot of people who are highly qualified for this award and so the fact that I was chosen is really an honor,” said Penick.

WAMC Commander, Col. David Zinnante congratulated and presented Penick with a commander’s coin during a coining ceremony, Jan. 27., for her efforts in taking care of patients and teammates while training and preparing research.

Penick talks about what this award means for patients and other residents.

Penick hopes that the award highlights that there are people at WAMC who are trying to do wonderful things in terms of health care to help build the future of medicine.

“I am excited to be able to show the residents that I work with, that people notice the things that you do and how wonderful it feels to pay it forward and to be able to continue to provide opportunities for others,” said Penick.

As the junior level leader selected, Penick is that those she has followed are excited to see what’s coming after them, and for those behind her to be and step into the roles that she has had. She explained that this is important because they will be able to continue the cycle of providing efficient, safe, and compassionate care for their patients and each other.

“It's really exciting to see our residents take part in research that can shape the care we provide to our patients and to see what the military female physicians have been doing in terms of providing opportunities for networking, outreach and mentoring amongst all of the services,” said Penick.

Capt. Stephanie Bulder, obstetrics and gynecology resident and Penik’s mentee, praised Penick for her work.

“I think it is well deserved, because Dr. Penick has been someone who has very much championed our academics, our education within our residency program, our research projects and has been a mentor to me, specifically, with regards to research presentations and projects that I have been able to present at a district and now national level this coming February.”
