FORT POLK, La. - The 1st Brigade Combat Team, 101st Airborne Division kicked off the year with a Joint Readiness Training Center rotation and a visit from the United States Army Forces Command Commanding Gen. Charles Campbell Jan. 12 at Fort Polk, La.

Campbell received a briefing on the current status of the Bastogne Brigade as they prepare for their upcoming deployment to Afghanistan in support of Operation Enduring Freedom.

The Bastogne Brigade updated Campbell on the intense training that leading up to JRTC, which included squad, platoon, and company level training.

He was also briefed on the dedication of both resources and time to help Soldiers build a better relationship with their spouses and children including strong bonds and schools adopting Soldiers.

"It was a good lay down by our operations officer," said Lt. Col. Randall Harris, deputy commanding officer. "He got to see all the building blocks and methodology behind our training. He saw that we had a purpose of training and an end state that we are trying to get to," he said. "I think we've gotten there as a brigade. JRTC will continue to flesh out those training tasks and the ability to bring a team together."

After the briefing, Campbell shared some expert advice with the Brigade Commander Col. Andrew Poppas, Brigade Command Sgt. Maj. Kevin Benson, other non-commissioned officers and officers on what is expected of them, what is to come and reminded them the overall purpose of their mission.

"I think the biggest thing he said was a quote from a letter he received saying 'Do not tire of doing good,'" said Harris. "That resonated at least to me and probably across the other leaders of the brigade that we are here for a purpose. We are trying to help folks out and we can't get tired of doing that," he said. "No matter how many problems we have or challenges we face, continue to do good."

As the FORSCOM Commander departs with the knowledge of Bastogne's progress of becoming a more resilient force, he reminds them about the strength of the United States Army.

"One thing this Army does well is training corps, divisions and brigade combat teams," said Campbell.
