Fort Bragg, N.C. -- In honor of Arbor Day, the XVIII Airborne Corps held a ceremony to plant trees across Liberty Park, creating a tapestry of colors for future generations of Soldiers, their families, and community members to enjoy on Feb 8.

Soldiers assigned to Fort Bragg, North Carolina, planted 42 Oak trees, 2 Magnolias, 2 Dogwoods, 2 Hollies, and 32 units of Purple Muhly grass.

Since 1872, Arbor Day has been observed throughout the nation and the world. Celebrating the crucial role that trees play in daily life. An investment in the ecosystem is an investment in delivering a sustainable installation that strives to enhance mission effectiveness, reduce the Army’s environmental impact, comply with federal sustainable mandates, build green sustainable facilities, and achieve levels of energy independence that improve the continuity of mission-essential operations.

Maj. Gen. Brian J. Mennes, XVIII Airborne Corps deputy commanding general, planted the first tree after giving words on the importance of linking Soldiers to the community at large.

“Arbor Day is a great opportunity to link our Soldiers with the community, an opportunity to instill the spirit of pride that we all share on this base,” said Mennes. “DPW (Directorate of Public Works), the national service branch, and the Corps leadership find these opportunities critical in our approach to advance our sustainability initiatives.”

Brian Vesely, Chief Director of Project Management for Fort Bragg, taught tree planting fundamentals to a large group of Soldiers before they broke out in groups and started planting.

The informative class was attended by every Soldier at the ceremony with a wide variety of professions and rank, to include Mennes.

For the last eight years, Vesely has been passionately working with Fort Bragg, creating an active community for Soldiers and their families. During the ceremony, in honor of the celebration, Vesely read his poem of choice. ‘‘The Liberty Tree,” written by Thomas Paine, provided an acknowledgment of Fort Bragg’s inherent value to strive to secure the blessings of liberty.

“The community will gather around these Liberty trees for years to come, and they will offer an environment for people to enjoy,” said Vesely.
