FORT BLISS, Texas - Service members, veterans, and military spouses attended a job fair hosted by Army Community Service at the Centennial Banquet and Conference Center, on Feb. 9.

The event took six months to plan and hosted roughly 106 job seekers and over 80 employers. The hiring fair was open to Department of Defense personnel. ACS fairs give military personnel, their families, and veterans a chance to network with potential employers, find out about job openings and improve job-searching abilities.

U.S. Army Pfc. Noah Clayton, a fire control specialist assigned to 2-3 Field Artillery, 1st Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division, attended the event and expressed his appreciation for the event that he says, “is always good.”

“I feel like it has a great impact on the community and soldiers that are transitioning,” Clayton said. “It’s significantly easier to come and get a one-on-one experience than applying online, and soldiers need that.”

ACS hiring fairs provide military members with a centralized and convenient location to explore job opportunities, network with potential employers and learn about local employment trends.

“I want to stay in El Paso, I love the city,” expressed Clayton. “I’ve gotten multiple references to programs that help veterans and active duty find jobs in El Paso and I couldn’t be happier.”

Ernest Valtier, an employment readiness specialist with ACS’ employment readiness program spoke about the importance and significance of hiring events for military spouses.

“Spouses are looking for employment whether it’s remote or in-person,” said Valtier. “They’re looking for positions, so this is a great help to the Fort Bliss community.”

ACS employment fairs can play an important role in assisting military members with their transition to civilian life. Finding meaningful employment is sometimes one of the largest problems faced by veterans as they make the transition from the military to civilian life.

“So far they’ve helped me out with my resume and how to cater it towards the career field I choose,” said U.S. Army Sgt. Christopher Heath, a Horizontal Engineer assigned to the 40th Engineer Company, 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division. “There are so many options out there, these fairs exist so a service member, veteran, or spouse can find the right opportunity for them.”

Veterans have the chance to meet employers at ACS job fairs who are dedicated to hiring veterans and recognize the value they bring to the workplace. Veterans can network with potential employers, get assistance with their job hunt, and find out about employment openings by attending these events.

Fort Bliss’ ACS organization hosts hiring fairs semi-annually with preparation classes for both employers representing their company or organization, DOD employees, and families seeking a new career. ACS’ next hiring fair is slated for August 2023.
