    U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command

Interior Communications Electrician 1st Class Daquan King, from Augusta, Georgia, is a recruit division commander (RDC) “C” school instructor and the Recruit Division Commander of the Year (RDCOY) at U.S. Navy Recruit Training Command (RTC).

The RDC of the year is different than the Sailor of the Year. For the RDC of the Year, the focus is on the success of their divisions, their physical readiness, and a board that reviews the RDC’s Recruit Training Manuel, better known as the Red Book.

RTC’s Commanding Officer, Capt. Kertrek Brooks named King as the RDCOY. Chief Aviation Ordnanceman Michael Claudio and Machinist Mate 1st Class Miles Smith nominated King; and he was competing with two other RDCs.

“I wouldn’t say I stood out, but I was very humbled to be nominated by my peers,” said King. “I did meet some of the checkpoints. I did eight pushes and got the [distinguished leadership award]. But I wouldn’t say I stood out.”

King was excited when he found out he won, and said it was the first time he ever won something like that. He wants to pay it forward and help one of his coworkers earn the next RDC of the Year.

“That’s my goal,” he said. “Train someone else in my office, and pass it down. Including me, the last three RDCs of the year are from RDC “C” school—all were “C” school instructors. I want to keep that running and going.”

King joined the Navy in 2013 and served aboard the USS America (LHA 6) before reporting to RTC in 2020.

Boot camp is approximately 10 weeks and all enlistees into the U.S. Navy begin their careers at the command. Training includes physical fitness, seamanship, firearms, firefighting and shipboard damage control along with lessons in Navy heritage and core values, teamwork and discipline. More than 40,000 recruits train annually at the Navy’s only boot camp.
