FORT CARSON, Colo. — Pfc. Javion D. Craft, an 11B, an infantryman with 2nd Battalion, 12th Infantry Regiment, 2nd Stryker Brigade Combat Team, 4th Infantry Division, joined the Army in April 2021 out of Houston, Texas to continue a family legacy.

Craft believes that being an infantryman in the Army is challenging at times but loves what he does.

“We take pride in being the best at everything we do, from being physically fit to executing our job in the field or down range,” said Craft. “I have learned new skills, and have grown as a Soldier and as a man. I have built unbreakable bonds that will prevail even through combat.”

Craft is proud to serve as an African American man in the armed forces.

“Celebrating Black History Month is important, because without the people who came before me, I wouldn't be where I am today,” said Craft. “They didn't have the opportunity that I have today, and that's why it's important that we continue to celebrate and to remember what we have gone through and where we are today.”

Craft strives to continue his family legacy of military service. He honors his uncle, Sgt. Retired James P. Franklin, the father figure in his life, who served in an airborne unit during the Vietnam War.

“He took me fishing, hunting, golfing, and he was always at my school games and practices,” said Craft. “Knowing I can keep my family’s tradition alive while honoring those who came before me is important to me during Black History Month.”
