National Harbor, Md. (Feb. 14, 2023) – AMSUS awarded the Lewis L. Seaman Enlisted Award for Outstanding Operational Support – Junior Enlisted (E-5 – E-6) to Sgt. (Promotable) Tomas Martinez of Bassett Army Community Hospital, Fort Wainwright, Alaska, during the Feb. 13-19, annual convention.
The Society of Federal Health Professionals, referred to as AMSUS, is a health care advocate for our men and women in uniform, veterans, the Department of Health and Human Services, and all other federally supported health care organizations. Part of their advocacy is to recognize outstanding military health practitioners and health support professionals.
The award was established in 1900 and was named after Maj. Lewis Livingston Seaman, a Surgeon of the 1st U.S. Volunteers in the Spanish-American War. It recognizes an outstanding enlisted medical healthcare professional who has made a significant impact in the areas of patient care, clinical support, or healthcare management, and to their service’s medical mission.
Martinez has been in the Army six and a half years and serves as non-commissioned officer in charge (NCOIC) in the Sterile Processing Department. He assists the operating room NCOIC in management of the surgical suite, which averages 200 surgical procedures per month.
“Effective communication is the most important quality that every NCO should have,” Martinez said. “But other qualities that are important in my respective MOS are having initiative, being competent, engaging in critical thinking or problem solving, and demonstrating selflessness.”
He is responsible for a range of administrative duties and ensures the department is in full compliance with all Joint Commission and governing agency requirements.
One of Martinez’s tasks is to ensure operating rooms are sterile and ready for surgery. This practice is critical to keeping Soldiers able to recover and respond—a short return to duty is critical in keeping units resilient and ready.
He oversees daily processes for sterilization, maintaining proper environment of care, and infection control standards.
Martinez works to display leadership for his subordinates and compassion toward his patient population. He tries to set the best example possible. “Always do the right thing without expecting anything in return,” he said. “Showing initiative and hard work speaks for itself.”
Especially important, Martinez leads, develops, and mentors 12 junior Soldiers.
“My personal approach to mentor junior enlisted personnel is by using one-to-one explanations, hands on training, and providing proper guidance to allow them to attempt the task and provide resources,” he said.
Martinez feels that dedication to the Army Medicine mission is a force multiplier, and it ensures that the Bassett Army Community Hospital continues to meet the needs of the Army patient population.
