ANA send reinforcements to Helmand province

The 3rd Brigade's 1st Battalion — known as a 'Kandak' in the Afghan National Army — spent the month prior in a whirlwind of pre-deployment training: from tasks such as map reading, vehicle checkpoints and reacting to ambushes to learning new radio and weapon systems.

"If we equip the personnel, they will have stronger morale ... and have a better ability to defend the country even under difficult circumstances," said Afghan Lt. Col. Rais Khan, the 201st Corps training officer. "The enemy will not be able to accomplish the courses of action they would most like to."

"This type of training can increase personnel's combat skills and capabilities, so the battalion will be able to conduct successful missions," added Afghan Lt. Col. Nabi-u-allah, the battalion commander.

Much of the training was conducted by experienced Afghan National Army noncommissioned officers, to better establish them for their leadership role in the field. Unfamiliar techniques were taught by Coalition mentors or Department of Defense contractors from Military Professional Resources, Inc.
