CAMP HUMPHREYS, South Korea — The largest vacation Bible school in the Army began their summer preparations, Feb. 21, with a volunteer meeting at U.S. Army Garrison Humphreys' Pacific Victors Chapel, aimed at connecting those interested in volunteering in various roles to help make the event a success. This year’s VBS is scheduled for Aug. 7-11.

“We are overseas, so we want to meet early as possible to prepare well for VBS,” said Myoung Lee, director of religious education at Camp Humphreys. “A lot of people are vacationing during the summer, the time right before our VBS, so this is a good time to prepare and recruit all leaders and volunteers.”

Lee said he expects 250 children to participate in-person and says a minimum of 140 volunteers are needed to support the event. Registration for VBS has been full the last two years with some families being turned away. Lee said more volunteers means a potential to increase the number of children the event can host.

Volunteers are needed for areas ranging from games to snacks to first aid. Additionally, those with publicity, photography and videography skills are sought after to help increase awareness and also to support the virtual component of VBS.

“We expect another 50 to join online,” said Lee. “We were the only virtual VBS of the 70 Army installations last year. Last year, without a virtual option, those (at other installations across Korea) would not have been able to have a VBS, so I’m glad we are able to provide that.”

Megan Noell, the VBS director, said volunteers are what makes the event possible. Background checks are required for those interacting with children directly, but there are many responsibilities and tasks that don’t require a background check such as decor and publicity. Noel said there are many bonuses to volunteering.

“Volunteers enjoy a handful of perks such as volunteer hours and those who volunteer can sign their children up early for VBS,” said Noell. “Also, if you volunteer during the VBS week there is childcare.”
