POZNAN, Poland – Command Sgt. Maj. Arthur “Cliff” Burgoyne III, III Armored Corps’ Command Sergeant Major, Fort Hood, Texas, met with leaders and Soldiers during his visit to Camp Kościuszko, Poland.
III Armored Corps works alongside NATO allies to ensure deterrence and defense.
“It's important that we continue the partnership with all the NATO countries and show our resolve to ensure that the world stays free as it is,” said Burgoyne. “This is something bigger than ourselves.”
Burgoyne’s visit emphasizes the importance of leader engagement.
“It is a highlight of my career to be able to go see Soldiers deployed in an environment where they feel they have purpose,” said Burgoyne. “It has been incredible talking to Soldiers and seeing their exuberance and personalities thrive.”
Burgoyne believes Soldier morale is essential for leader development.
“I talked to Soldiers today and they were very motivated about their jobs,” said Burgoyne.” “That is awesome.”
Burgoyne’s priority is taking care of Soldiers.
“Just because a Soldier is not wearing a III Corps patch does not mean they are not III Corps,” said Burgoyne.” My biggest goal is to ensure that all our soldiers deploying have the resources and the training they need to accomplish their mission.”
Burgoyne believes effective mentorship positively impacts professional development.
“As leaders, we have to do our best to find the why for our Soldiers,” said Burgoyne. “If we can find out and tap into that, we can get them on the right path.”
Burgoyne shared his experience with Soldiers.
“When I was a specialist, my battalion sergeant major asked me what I want to do, and I said I want to go to Ranger School and Airborne School,” said Burgoyne. “He got me there and sent me to a unit that would allow me to do that. I am here today because he looked out for me by going the extra mile.”
Burgoyne offered insightful guidance to future leaders in the U.S. Army.
“One of the things I take away from my experience is that a leader must be authentic,” said Burgoyne. “Be who you are, and let the Army accept you for who you are.”
