FORT CARSON, Colo. --Women's History Month takes place in March and highlights the contributions of women to events in history and contemporary society. Women have had a part in the U.S. Army since the Revolutionary War, taking the role of cooks, nurses, and seamstresses. The modern day Army has no gender requirements for becoming a Soldier, and welcomes all walks of life into the ranks.
Sgt. Emily Daley, a flutist assigned to the 4th Infantry Division Band, never expected to join the Army. Teaching elementary school music classes for years, and being the director of the school band and school choir, Daley’s love for music stretched further than just the Army. Even before getting into education, Daley grew up learning how to play piano just like her mother, and picked up the flute for marching band while in school.
“I realized, as I was a teacher, I did not have many opportunities to actually play music, just teach,” said Daley. “I realized what I really wanted to do was play music.”
While in college, Daley had the opportunity to see a military band perform. She got the idea to do research on joining the Army and start her journey.
“I realized what I was doing wasn't what I wanted, and life is too short to be stuck doing things you don’t want to do,” said Daley.
As a 4th Inf. Div. Band member, Daley performs for military ceremonies, concerts, parades and community events to gain a stronger connection between Fort Carson and towns surrounding post. The 4th Inf. Div. Band takes pride in community outreach and welcoming everyone into their world of music.
“Being in the Army is about pursuing my passion as a musician as well as bettering myself as a person and as a leader through all of the opportunities the Army has to offer,” Daley said.
