FORT CARSON, Colo. – Sgt. Corey White, a musician with the 4th Infantry Division Band, prepares his clarinet for an upcoming solo. The outside world is muffled by the soundproof room -- a tranquil atmosphere building in the silence. All there is at that moment is the sound of his melancholy performance. The air is filled with mournful notes that move slowly and steadily, like a drop of rain trickling down a window. His passion and talent shine through, inspiring everyone around him. This passion has grown significantly since the time before White enlisted.
White was a college student in High Point, N.C., pursuing a degree in musical performance. He had a love for playing clarinet and wanted to share this love with the world. Once he got his degree, he enlisted and applied for a job as a musician. His dream was coming closer and closer to being realized, and the Army helped make his dream a reality.
“I wanted to see what the world had to offer in terms of musical opportunities,” White said. “It delivered, for sure. We go to different states. I've played with the Republic of Korea Band. It’s been very fun.”
Not only was he able to develop his musical abilities, but he also developed relationships with a diverse group of people. This diverse group, featuring Soldiers from all over the world, allowed him to change and grow in a way he has since come to appreciate. Now, White can enjoy the beautiful catharsis music brings with an even bigger crowd than college had offered him. Whether it was musicians from different services or people he would work with on a daily basis, he found a community where his talent could flourish and fully manifest.
“I’ve been surrounded by a bunch of different people, and I feel like it’s important for other people to get that experience,” White said. “I wouldn’t be this accepting, and I probably wouldn’t be this open to different ways of living if I wasn’t experiencing this level of diversity.”
This diversity is being celebrated over the course of Black History Month, an annual observance dedicated to recognizing and celebrating important people and events in African American history. Whether it be the struggles African Americans have endured over the years or the triumphs they have seen come to fruition, Black History Month is an opportunity to remember and commemorate it all.
“Growing up my parents always taught me about my family’s history, about how they came to the United States,” White said. “I feel like if you don’t know history, you’ll be doomed to repeat it.”
