MARINE CORPS BASE CAMP PENDLETON, California – Steven R. Wolfe retired as deputy facility manager for Marine Corps Installations West on Feb. 2, 2023. He served 33 years in both active-duty military and as a civilian employee. Wolfe has had esteemed success throughout his career as a member of active-duty personnel and a civilian.

Wolfe graduated from Coronado High School in 1982 and received his Civil Engineering degree from the University of California, Berkeley, four years later. After gaining inspiration from his father, who served in the Navy for 27 years, he was commissioned as a Civil Engineer Corps (CEC) officer in the U.S. Navy. He began his active-duty service from 1987 to 1994.

"The main positive in being a part of the Navy's Civil Engineer Corps is the opportunity to serve with and lead Seabees," said Wolfe. "Seabees and their 'Can Do' attitude are most often in support of Marine Corps units that need construction or other engineering support."

As mentioned, the Seabees are the United States Naval Construction Battalions; the nickname comes from the initial letters "CB" from the words "Construction Battalion," which sounds like Seabee.

Coming off active duty, he undertook the private sector business. He became the founder and owner of the Whatever It Takes Group, Inc. and Diverse Knowledge, Inc., both small and private engineering and construction management firms.

"I enjoyed the direct engagement with clients and the application of my technical engineering degree but missed the larger camaraderie of military service."

Although his businesses were successful and helped him grow, he soon returned to working in federal service.

After becoming a licensed professional engineer, Camp Pendleton needed his expertise as a deputy public works officer, where he then got promoted to business performance officer in 2005, and served in that capacity until 2007.

On two separate occasions he was recalled to active duty, the first as the commanding officer of Naval Mobile Construction Battalion 15. The second time he was recalled to active duty, he served as Seabee Liaison Officer to Naval Forces Europe and Africa. The Wolfe family is no stranger to deployments. His wife, Darcy Wolfe, a former U.S. Navy captain with the CEC, had also deployed with the Seabees for the United States Central Command (CENTCOM).

"My family was accustomed to deployments," he replied when asked how his family adapted to him being recalled. "My wife and I have seven deployments between us, so we understand the need to forward deploy to support our nation's military objectives."

Wolfe always advocated for continuing education and advancing one's capabilities as a priority. He took his own advice and was later awarded the Master of Business Administration degree from American Military University in 2011.

From 2012 to now, he served as the Deputy Facility Manager for MCI-West. Just last year, Wolfe assisted in the increase of $660 million for military construction, which he added will have a significant and positive impact on the installation.

"There were many challenges, including fires and floods, but the professionals on the facilities team always made a positive difference in taking care of Marines, sailors, and families," said Wolfe. "I loved knowing that our team was making a difference when it mattered most."

As he retires, the only thing next on Wolfe's agenda is to spend more time with family and friends, focusing on deepening those relationships.

"I just want folks to say they appreciated working with me. That I listened to them and that they understood they were important to me," he adds. "I am honored to have served with the great team at MCI-West. I carry with me great memories, great friendships, and an appreciation for all the work this team does every day."
