RAMSTEIN AIR BASE, Germany – Ramstein Air Base is hosting a job fair, which will offer direct-hire positions for qualifying military spouses, at the Kaiserslautern Community Center Mall on March 3, 2023.

A list of positions that will be offered at the Ramstein Job Fair can be found at https://ramstein.af.mil/PCS-Info/Direct-Hire/.

“We are so excited to be rolling out this program here,” said Renae Fischer, 86th Airlift Wing vice director. “Our spouses are a vital part of the team, and we are working hard to take care of them with programs like this.”

The pilot program is available for overseas positions as determined by the hiring officials. Direct-hire authority enables an agency to hire any qualified applicant through an expedited hiring process that eliminates many of the traditional steps. Job seekers are encouraged to bring hard copies of their resumes to the job fair so they can be given directly to hiring officials that are considering using the direct hire authority.

“This new program reduces the job competition pool because it allows spouses to only compete with other spouses versus other eligible candidates such as reassignments and transfers,” said Kathryn Iapichino, 86th Force Support Squadron chief of U.S. staffing. “This means spouses have a greater likelihood of being selected for Federal employment while overseas.”

Initial employment appointment under DHA will not exceed two years and can be extended in two-year increments for no more than a total of six years. The appointments will end when the service member transfers back to the U.S. or to another overseas assignment. They may also end due to divorce, death of the sponsor or upon the sponsor’s retirement or separation from active duty.

“The goal of the DHA is to increase employment opportunities for spouses in the Ramstein KMC area and provide experiences that will lead to continuous Federal employment for future military spouses overseas,” Iapichino said.

Military Spouse Preference (MSP) is not impacted by employment through a DHA position.

“This gives spouses the opportunity to try out different jobs while not losing their spousal preference and gives them an in when looking for a permanent position,” said Larry Ray, 86th FSS civilian personnel officer.

The “Open Continuous” jobs that can be found on USA Jobs, (https://www.usajobs.gov/), include secretary, general engineer, contract specialist, housing manager, human resources specialist, supervisory youth programs specialist, budget analyst, security specialist and sustainment services specialist positions under the DHA, but are not limited to these jobs.

Spouses interested in applying for civil service employment can visit the Air Force Civilian Service site, (https://afciviliancareers.com/find-a-job/), to search for jobs being filled using the direct-hire authority process. Additionally, local civilian personnel offices can provide assistance and information.
