FORT BLISS, Texas – A key component of the U.S. Army readiness is Soldier and Family Readiness Groups. SFRGs support Soldiers and their family members by providing ways to prepare, sustain, and communicate in a military lifestyle. The main goal of these groups is to keep families informed and supported while Soldiers are deployed or going through troubled times. The groups are comprised of service members, military spouses, and dependents who volunteer for their positions as SFRG advisors.
“SFRGs help military families feel comfortable connecting,” Nastassia Bailey said, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment Soldier and Family Readiness Group advisor. “It especially helps kids connect with other children who can relate to the military way of life.”
Bailey has volunteered with her husband’s SFRG at every assignment he has been with for the past 18 years. She is a prior U.S. Army service member with service in Iraq, so she has seen first-hand the benefits of the SFRG. Bailey’s sons have also learned how SFRG can help them as military children.
“My oldest son was born in Germany and my youngest in Georgia,” Bailey said. “My oldest didn’t even set foot in the [United] States until he was five. SFRG gave them friends and peers to connect with.”
Bailey has volunteered and helped plan various SFRG events. She participated in Operation Deploy Your Dress which gave free dresses out for military balls, organized sign painting for Soldiers, and helped provide new bed sheets and pillowcases for Soldiers after returning from South Korea.
“My wife and the other volunteers help take stress away from families in need. She even helps run the food trains to support sick children of military families,” 1st Sgt. Thomas Bailey said, Headquarters and Headquarters Battery, 2nd Battalion, 3rd Field Artillery Regiment. “I am very proud of the hard work and dedication she has put in at every duty station we have been at.”
