Team Moody is celebrating Women In Aviation Week by coordinating numerous school visits and base tours for students March 6-10, 2023, including a showcase of various missions and even an appearance of the Air Force Band.
Moody's goal for WIA Week is to highlight different aviation careers for local youths and inspire them to consider futures in the Air Force.
“This year it will be three days of us going to schools and three days of schools coming to us,” said Tech. Sgt. Aaron Edmonds, 372nd Training Squadron A-10C Thunderbolt II field training detachment instructor. “The whole purpose of this is to both encourage women to pursue careers in aviation in one capacity or another, and to entice students to come see what it is we do here in the military.”
Women In Aviation is celebrated worldwide to raise awareness for women’s accomplishments in the field and to show the next generation the paths they have available.
“When you see kids at these events and they see a female in a pilot suit, they are usually surprised,” said Capt. Rose Porras, WIA event coordinator, and 71st Rescue Squadron pilot and assistant flight commander. “It’s still not widely known that women can be aviators. We want to communicate to our youth that they can be a female in whatever career they want.”
A particular focus of the celebration this year is to expose people to not only aviators, but also those who enable aviation.
“It's not just about pilots, it’s about air crew, medical and maintenance,” Porras said. “There is so much that goes into putting a plane in the air – everyone is a part of it, and we want people to see more of that.”
