EINSIEDLERHOF AIR STATION, Germany – The 5th Combat Training Squadron hosted the SPARTAN REAPER 23-1 exercise, Feb. 6 – 10, 2023 at Einsiedlerhof Air Station in Germany.
The exercise is a simulated Strike Coordination and Reconnaissance (SCAR) multilateral exercise hosted by the U.S. Air Forces in Europe and Air Forces Africa Warfare Center.
SPARTAN REAPER 23-1 provided a training avenue for NATO partners to integrate with each other, conduct in-person planning and execution in an integrated virtual environment.
Participating units included the 50th Attack Squadron at Shaw Air Force Base in South Carolina; 162nd Attack Squadron located on Springfield Air National Guard Base in Ohio; and 32° (The 32nd Wing "Armando Boetto") Stormo in Italy.
NATO allies trained to SCAR in scenarios that challenged participants to coordinate and deliver battlefield effects in a large-scale combat operations simulated environment.
Participating units practiced combat search and rescue tactics, techniques and procedures. They also trained on the UAWC’s fully networked MQ-9 simulators while fighting in a scenario designed and built by UAWC subject matter experts.
SPARTAN REAPER gave NATO Airmen the opportunity to train in a complex scenario complete with simulated surface-to-surface fires and air-to-surface threat systems. While difficult to achieve and expensive when conducting the use of real aircraft on a training range, virtual exercises provide flexibility and efficiency.
This is the first ever execution of a non-distributed SPARTAN REAPER exercise with the first dedicated MQ-9 SCAR using UAW’s MQ-9 simulators.
