Many Marines throughout their career will eventually face the same question, should you stay in or transition out of the Marine Corps?
"Do you believe in the purpose that you have? Do you believe in being a Marine?" said Retired U.S. Marine Corps Sgt. Dakota Meyer, Medal of Honor recipient. "That's your deciding factor when it's time to make the decision."
On March 1, 2023, Meyer visited and spoke with Marines throughout 2d Marine Division (MARDIV) about the importance of utilizing all available resources when transitioning out of the Marine corps. He continued to pass on his knowledge and inspire Marines to be the best leaders they can be.
"One thing I took from today was finding a purpose," said U.S. Marine Corps Cpl. Alfredo Leon III, a basic electrician with 2d Combat Engineer Battalion. "You start to look at the bigger picture instead of thinking about yourself, and for me, I'm starting to like what I do."
The Marines can take what they learned here today to be better leaders and teach those who come after them.
"I chose to be here, and it was very motivating," said Cpl. Courtney Leese, a motor transport operator with 1st Battalion, 10th Marine Regiment, 2d MARDIV. "I look forward to setting the standard and sharing what I learned with my junior Marines."
Meyer stated that whether you are transitioning out of the Marine Corps or reenlisting, as long as you have a purpose, you will find a way to be successful.
"Believing in what you do can carry a lot of Marines throughout their careers," said Sgt. Major Stephen J. Lutz Jr., sergeant major, 10th Marine Regiment, 2d MARDIV. "Understanding how the whole process works and being able to learn is what makes you successful."
