HOUSTON – One of the largest military installations in the world joined forces with the nation's largest rodeo to celebrate military service, honor veterans, and to have a Texas-styled good time.

Hundreds of Soldiers from across III Armored Corps and Fort Hood participated in the 2023 Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in celebration of Armed Forces Appreciation Day, March 1, 2023.

In addition to the III Armored Corps Headquarters leadership attending, the 3d Cavalry Regiment brought two Stryker combat vehicles to display, and the 13th Armored Corps Sustainment Command leadership made an appearance to commemorate their Soldiers and families and to show support to the community.

A special part of the festivities involved America's newest recruits. The future service members raised their right hands in front of thousands of Soldier and veterans, officially joining the United States Armed Forces.

"The future of our Army is in great hands, and I am proud to have been part of such an extraordinary event," said Lt. Gen. Sean Bernabe, commander, III Armored Corps and Fort Hood.

Bernabe administered the oath of enlistment, swearing in the new recruits and thanked the future service members for their courage and commitment to defend the Constitution of the United States.

Throughout the military appreciation event, Bernabe and fellow Fort Hood leaders met members of the Armed Forces Appreciation Committee, spoke with Soldiers and veterans, and participated in the camaraderie of the the rodeo.

"For the Houston Rodeo Armed Forces Appreciation Committee, it’s an opportunity for us to tell our heroes we appreciate them and thank them and show them a Texas-sized welcome,” said Spike Garcia, U.S. Air Force (Retired) Master Sgt. and Armed Forces Appreciation Committee Chairman. “I’m glad I have the opportunity to thank those that are currently serving, and our hero’s here today."

The Houston Livestock and Rodeo Show Armed Forces Appreciation Day is a day dedicated to honor and commemorate the U.S. military men and women who served in the past, present, and will serve in the future. This is the thirteenth year the Armed Forces Appreciation Committee has put on the appreciation day for service members.
