FORT HOOD, Texas -- The military community spoke and Casey Memorial Library listened. Prompted by customer requests, the facility has officially extended its schedule to include Mondays and later evening availability here.
Amy Roumelle, CML director, explained that the facility closed for a few weeks due to the pandemic back in 2020. Upon re-opening, it was closed on Mondays and had no late evening hours. The space is now open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday, closing at 7 p.m. on Tuesday and Wednesday.
Roumelle expressed that the staff was excited to finally be able to expand library hours and better accommodate the needs of Soldiers and their families.
“That’s what we’re here for, to serve Soldiers and families. We try to accommodate requests when we’re able to, so that we can provide the service (customers) actually need.”
CML offers over 70,000 books and audiobooks, as well as DVDs and video games. There is also a separate children’s area with a variety of books and other resources suited for younger readers.
Activities and events for all ages such as Storytime, Make and Take Craft and Dungeons and Dragons Meetup are offered monthly.
The facility also provides access to 75 public computers with printing capability and copy machines. Roumelle said the library offers some of the only public computers on base.
CML takes pride in providing best sellers and the newest arrivals, but if by chance they don’t have a specific title, they take requests and will do their best to make it available.
“We really want to try and give our patrons what it is they’re looking for,” Roumelle said.
She went on to explain that reading can be a great stress reliever. “Books are always a great way to escape stress. Lose yourself in another place, learn something new, and of course video games, DVDs are a great way to escape the stress,” Roumelle said. “Also, having a lot of family resources, (Soldiers) feel relieved knowing that their families are being taken care of as well, which I think reduces the stress on them.”
Guests can also search the library through the online MyLibrary catalogs for books, ebooks, movies and can download free audiobooks.
CML partners with other Fort Hood organizations to organize events and activities on post. They will host Dr. Seuss Funday March 4 to celebrate Dr. Seuss’ birthday, the annual Spring Fling on March 17 and a special Storytime read by a to be announced author to commemorate Month of the Military Child in April.
Whether visitors come for fun, work or to just unwind, Roumelle stated the goal is to support the military community. “That’s our purpose, is to be here for them. That’s part of our mission,” she said.
