FORT BLISS, Texas – Command Sgt. Maj. Michael Williams relinquished his responsibility as the senior noncommissioned officer of the 1st Armored Division here March 3.
Williams, who also celebrated his retirement on the same day, served as the division command sergeant major for three years.
During that time, there were several significant events that occurred at Fort Bliss. Two of the most notable were navigating through the COVID-19 pandemic and hosting thousands of Afghan refugees at Dona Ana Village.
While delivering his remarks, Williams thanked many people instrumental to him during his career, including his family and those with whom he had served.
“I am profoundly grateful and thankful to have had the opportunity to serve with all of you,” he said. “Serving in this division has been the best part of my career.”
William’s career spanned over 33 years, enlisting in April of 1990 as a 19D, Armor Reconnaissance Specialist.
He served in every NCO leadership position respective to his military occupational specialty throughout his enlistment. He was also a drill sergeant and the brigade command sergeant major of the 2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team, 1st Armored Division before assuming the mantle of the division command sergeant major.
His deployments included major conflict theaters including Operations Desert Shield, Desert Storm, and Operation Iraqi Freedom, to which he saw multiple tours.
“And now, today, my time in the Army is spent, and the time of my departure is near,” Williams said. “I have fought the good fight. I have finished the race.”
