WROCŁAW, Poland -- U.S. Soldiers assigned to the 4th Division Sustainment Brigade bid farewell to a senior leader during a change of responsibility ceremony in Wrocław, Poland, March 9, 2023.

Command Sgt. Maj. Phillip C. Hollifield, outgoing command sergeant major of the 4th DSB, relinquished responsibilities to Command Sgt. Maj. Aaron W. Campanella, incoming command sergeant major.

As presiding officer for the event, Col. Kevin W. Agness, the brigade commander of 4th DSB, had the honor of passing the unit colors from Hollifield to Campanella, a long-standing tradition throughout the Army. The passing of the colors is a symbolic statement entrusting the incoming command sergeant major with protecting the colors and the Soldiers who fall under them.

“It is always a great day when the Army changes out leadership,” said Hollifield. “The bedrock of our great Army is built on change.”

Agness took the opportunity to speak before those in attendance about the long professional relationship he and Hollifield have maintained throughout their time together.

Agness quoted retired Command Sgt. Maj. Ken Killingsworth who said the commander is responsible for the command and the command sergeant major is responsible to the command.

“This is the best way to describe the relationship I have with command sergeant major Hollifield since 2018,” said Agness. “I frankly could not have asked for a better teammate; we share a mutual respect and commitment to each other followed by trust and devotion.”

The commander then expressed his excitement to see the future of the brigade with the newest senior enlisted advisor to take control.

“I’ve only known sergeant major Aaron Campanella for a few days but his reputation absolutely precedes that,” said Agness. “Sergeant major I welcome you and your family to the Rough Rider team and I’m excited for what the future holds.”

Hollifield served as the 4th DSB command sergeant major for thirty months. He then shared what the command sergeant major role meant to him.

“Thirty years have passed and I could not ask for a better way to end my career and service with the best division, the best Army and without a doubt, one of the most deployed and number one division sustainment brigades in the world,” said Hollifield.

Hollifield called Agness his battle, his buddy, friend and most of all brother. He wished him and his family many blessings.

The end of his role at the sustainment brigade, marks the end of a 30 year military career for Hollifield as he passes the duties and responsibilities of command sergeant major to Campanella.

“Col. Agness, I look forward to working with and learning from you sir and will work aggressively to extend your command influence and your command intent,” said Campanella. “To the Rough Rider team, I look forward to getting to know and work alongside you all. Be all you can be, steadfast and loyal, get it done.”
